Trails & Tales: A Journey to Len Foote Hike Inn

Hey Pumpkin Fans!

I am bursting with excitement to spill the beans about my recent adventure to Len Foote Hike Inn, nestled snugly within the breathtaking Amicalola Falls and State Park, just a stone’s throw away from our beloved Burt’s Pumpkin Farm. If you’re the type who thrives on hiking, immersing yourself in nature, and rubbing shoulders with fellow trail enthusiasts, then hold onto your hats because this blog post is tailor-made for you!

Picture this: a rustic backcountry lodge, a gateway to the legendary Appalachian Trail, and one of Georgia’s most cherished state park hideaways. Len Foote Hike Inn is all this and more. Open year-round, this sustainably designed gem sits pretty in the Chattahoochee National Forest, beckoning seasoned hikers, families, and friend groups alike to experience its magic.

Now, let me rewind to the start of my journey. My hubby and I kicked off our adventure with a late start, rolling into the park around 2 pm. (Note: Hike Inn kindly requests that hikers hit the trail by 2 pm to ensure arrival by 5 pm.) After a smooth check-in process at the Amicalola Visitor Center and parking our truck at designated spots, we set off on our trek.

The 1st really great lookout overlooking Dawsonville!

The 5-mile hike in was an absolute treat for the senses. Mile one had us buzzing with excitement, reconnecting with nature and each other after what felt like eons away. A breathtaking lookout around the end of mile one provided the perfect pit stop. As we trudged into miles two and three, we were greeted by friendly fellow hikers and, erm, one rather uninvited guest—a Timber Rattlesnake! Talk about a heart-pounding encounter, but fear not, these majestic creatures are more bark than bite.

Miles four and five brought a touch of drama with looming clouds and a brief rain shower, but even the downpour couldn’t dampen our spirits. If anything, it added to the allure of the trail, with riverside views and post-rain scents straight out of a fairytale.

Finally, through misty fog, Lynn Foote Hike Inn emerged like a beacon of serenity. Guests lounged in rocking chairs, offering warm welcomes as we arrived, our rattlesnake tale making us instant celebrities. After checking in and getting the lowdown on the inn’s eco-friendly practices (composting toilets, solar panels—the works!), we settled into our cozy bunks.

My husband when we finally made it to Hike Inn soaked with sweat and rain water…

Our room was a haven of comfort, complete with bunk beds and—praise be—plenty of hooks for drying out our soggy gear. A hot shower later, we joined fellow guests for a hearty family-style dinner, swapping stories and making fast friends over mouthwatering fare. Our menu consisted of delicious turkey slices, brussel sprouts, wild rice pilaf, a fresh salad, rolls and chocolate pound cake for dessert - YUM!

Our cozy little room!

The next morning dawned rainy but no less delightful, with the scent of bacon and fresh coffee beckoning us to breakfast. As the storm passed, we lingered over coffee, basking in the joy of unplugged conversation and newfound friendships.

Our delicious breakfast served family style.

Before bidding farewell to this slice of paradise, we couldn’t resist snagging a few souvenirs—a couple of shirts, some Hike Inn stickers—to keep the memories alive. And with hearts and bellies full and spirits soaring, we embarked on our hike back, already counting down the days till our next visit.

Pro tip: Pack wisely! While we had the essentials covered, a spare pair of shoes and cozy layers would’ve been game-changers. Oh, and don’t forget those binoculars for those killer lookouts!

So, dear friends, if you’re in the mood for an unforgettable fall escape, look no further than Lynn Foote Hike Inn and Burt’s Pumpkin Farm. But hurry, these spots fill up fast! Can’t wait to see you there!

Happy Trails,

Your pals at Burt’s Pumpkin Farm
